Abstract
Metallic oxide catalyst pellets, for example cobalt oxide pellets, are prepared by a process comprising (a) dissolving the metal or metals in acid, for example nitric acid, to form a soluble metallic salt solution, (b) adding NH3 and CO2 to precipitate a basic metallic carbonate, (c) recovering the precipitate from the supernatant, (d) washing the precipitate to remove soluble salts, (e) heating the washed precipitate at a temperature between 300 DEG and 500 DEG C. to form a mixture of metallic oxides, (f) mulling the mixture together with from 1 to 5% by weight of a lubricating sintering acid, (g) pelleting the resulting homogeneous mass, (h) heating the pellets in a free oxygen-containing atmosphere at a temperature between 500 DEG and 1300 DEG C. for 1 to 10 hours. The metals may be those of Group VIII, Group IB or Group IIB, optionally with a Group VI metal oxide. Cobalt and nickel are preferred for the preparation of hydrogenation catalysts. Sintering aids mentioned are animal and vegetable stearins and fatty acids or esters of fatty acids containing more than 12 carbon atoms. There is reference to addition of barium and silica to the solution obtained in step (a).ALSO:Metallic oxide catalyst pellets, for example cobalt oxide pellets, are prepared by a process comprising (a) dissolving the metal or metals in acid, for example nitric acid, to form a soluble metallic salt solution (b) adding NH3 and CO2 to precipitate a basic metallic carbonate (c) recovering the precipitate from the supernatant (d) washing the precipitate to remove soluble salts (e) heating the washed precipitate at a temperature between 300 DEG C. and 500 DEG C. to form a mixture of metallic oxides (f) mulling the mixture together with from 1% to 5% by weight of a lubricating sintering aid (g) pelleting the resulting homogeneous mass (h) heating the pellets in a free oxygen-containing atmosphere at a temperature between 500 DEG C. and 1300 DEG C. for 1 to 10 hours. The metals may be those of Group VIII, Group I B or Group II B, optionally with a Group VI metal oxide. Cobalt and nickel are preferred for the preparation of hydrogenation catalysts. Sintering aids mentioned are animal and vegetable stearins and fatty acids or esters of fatty acids containing more than 12 carbon atoms. There is reference to addition of barium and silica to the solution obtained in step (a).
