Abstract

1,059,113. Testing physical properties. W. & T. AVERY Ltd. Sept. 29, 1964 [Oct. 8, 1963], No. 39518/63. Heading G1S. A device for adjusting the effect of elasticity of components of a hydraulically powered testing apparatus comprises a ram and a supply system to supply hydraulic liquid to the ram, the device comprising means responsive to increasing liquid pressure in said system and ram for decreasing the hydraulic liquid capacity of the supply system and ram. The device comprises two cylinders 6, 7 in coaxial alignment with coaxial pistons 11, 12 respectively of different cross-sectional areas joined together so that as one piston 11 or 12 sinks into its cylinder the other emerges. A compressed helical spring 13 bears against the end of the larger piston 11 and the inner end of cylinder 7. Each cylinder has an inlet/outlet passage 15, 16 for connection into the hydraulic circuit of a testing machine. In a hydraulic testing machine the hydraulic fluid is fed from a reservoir 20 via a main chamber 19 and a needle valve 21 to the supply system 22 which is connected to a hydraulic ram 24. The inlet/outlet passage 15 is connected to the main chamber 19 and the passage 16 to a delivery pipe 23 so that the constant pressure difference achieved by a valve 21 and a piston 29 also exists between the liquid parts within the cylinders 6, 7. Since the pistons 6, 7 have different crosssectional areas, with deformations of the parts due to elasticity, the larger piston 6 will be forced out of its cylinder against the action of the spring 13 forcing the cylinder 7 into its cylinder and so displacing some of the liquid from the latter into the supply system 22 to decrease the capacity thereof. As the pressures fall the reverse takes place and the capacity is increased.
