Abstract
A polyurethane is prepared by reacting isotactic polypropylene oxide having substantially terminal hydroxy groups with an organic polyisocyanate or polyisothiocyanate. The polypropylene oxide may have a M.W. of 250-10,000 and the polyisocyanate may be aliphatic, cycloaliphatic or aromatic. The isotactic polypropylene oxide having terminal -OH groups may be prepared by degradation of isotactic polypropylene oxide with O2, O3 or radiation followed by reduction with a metallic hydride, e.g. LiAlH4, the undegraded isotactic polypropylene oxide having been prepared by polymerizing propylene oxide using a complex of FeCl3 and propylene oxide as catalyst and the isotactic fraction separated out by precipitation from aqueous acetone at – 20 DEG C. The polyurethane may be prepared by the “one-shot” or prepolymer methods. Foams may be produced by incorporating water or other blowing agent into the reaction mixture. In Example (1) isotactic polypropylene oxide was reacted with a molar excess of dicyclohexylmethane diisocynate to form a prepolymer which was reacted with butane diol and trimethylol propane in the presence of stannous octoate in dichloromethane. In Example (2) a prepolymer derived from tolylene diisocyanate and isotactic polypropylene glycol was mixed with water soluble silicone, stannous octoate, N-methylmorpholine, triethylamine and water and allowed to foam in a paper bag mould.
