Abstract

1,060,671. Determining liquid levels electrically. ENDRESS & HAUSER G. m. b. H. A. ENDRESS-VOGT, L. HAUSER, [trading as ENDRESS & HAUSEN G. m. b. H. & CO.] Feb. 3, 1964 [Feb. 2, 1963], No. 4554/64. Heading G1N. The fullness of a container is measured by a capacitive probe which incorporates a capacitor C12 (Fig. 1) to measure fullness and a dielectric constant compensating capacitor C13, the capacitors being connected in a bridge circuit unbalance of which is corrected by adjustment of resistor R11 and the position of the slider on R11 is an indication of fullness. The measuring capacitors are so balanced with C11 and C14 that with an empty container the deflection of the slider is zero. The unbalance voltage across the bridge is applied to a differential amplifier D10 the output of which is amplified at A10 and drives a motor M10 which moves the slider until the voltages V11, V13 are equal. Alternatively Fig. 2 (not shown) the differential amplifier may be connected directly across the bridge diagonal and will operate the motor to adjust one resistor the slider of which is earthed until the voltage drops, across each of the two resistors, are equal and the bridge is balanced. PROBE CONSTRUCTION. As shown Fig. 3, C12 is formed by concentric tubes 36, 37 and C13 by circular plates 43, 44, 45, held together by insulating distance pieces 47 and screws 46, the screws 46 electrically connecting plates 43, 45. The tubes 36, 37 are attached to a cover 53 of the container by an insulating member 33 a conductive distance piece 52 and a conductive holding ring 31. The electrical connection to the inner tube is through screw head 34 and a lead 40 is connected to the plate 44. The outer tube is connected through 31 and 52 to the centre tap of transformer T.
