Abstract
1,060,949. Decompression analogue device. MINISTER OF NATIONAL DEFENCE OF HER MAJESTY’S CANADIAN GOVERNMENT. Nov. 10, 1965 [Nov. 10, 1964], No. 47704/65. Heading B7U. [Also in Division G4] The effects upon human beings of breathing air at changing pressures is simulated by deriving a first analogue of the inert gas component of the pressure of the air supply, deriving a plurality of second analogues each responsive in time to changes in the first analogue and having a magnitude representative of the partial pressure of inert gas dissolved in a body tissue, and controlling the rate of change of the magnitude of the first analogue so that the ratios of the magnitudes of the second analogues to the magnitude of the first analogue are maintained at values at least as low as given predetermined values for each of the second analogues. The analogues may be pneumatic, hydraulic or electrical. Fig. 1 is a schematic representation of the invention using a pneumatic analogue to simulate the changes in concentration of an inert gas dissolved in a diver’s body during a dive. Chambers 5-8 having pressure gauges G1-G4 are connected through orifices 11-14 to a manifold 1 provided with an ” actual depth ” gauge 9 and ” ascent ” and ” descent ” values 2, 3 respectively. Each volume-orifice combination of said chambers is adjusted to represent a time constant analogous to the gas diffusion time constant of a body tissue compartment. Gas from a high pressure source is admitted at 15 until a gauge 10 indicates a pressure corresponding to the desired maximum depth of the dive. The descent valve 3 is opened by an amount to control the simulated rate of the descent as monitored by the actual depth gauge 9, the chambers 5-8 being pressurized at a rate determined by their volumeorifice combinations. On reaching the desired maximum depth, pressure is maintained for the time scheduled for the dive, after which the descent valve 3 is closed and the ascent valve 2 opened by a manually adjustable amount to simulate the pressure decrease corresponding to ascent at a certain rate. The simulated ascent may be made as rapidly as possible provided that the pressure ratio for each simulated tissue pressure, as read on any of the gauges G1 to G4, to the pressure as read on the gauge 9 corresponding to any particular depth, does not exceed a given ratio (at which decompression sickness or ” the bends ” would occur) for each tissue.
