Abstract

1,061,204. Heat insulation. E. W. SHAW. May 27, 1964, No. 21833/64. Heading F2X. An evacuated heat insulating panel 10, having thin metal walls and a porous filler slab insert 22 to support the walls, is assembled in an evacuating jig 30 which is heated to form soldered joints between a cap 19 over the panel evacuating aperture 18 and/or the panel edge seams. During assembly the cap 19 is supported by solder legs 20 over aperture 18 and pressed thereon by screw 59. The seams of the panel are compressed between rubber gaskets 44, 39 by a rubber sealed movable jig-side 47. The jig has channels 48 and 50 and a wire mesh 37 and glass cloth 38 joining the top and bottom sides of the panel. In a modification, Fig. 4, not shown, the panel is evacuated through the edge seams which are compressed by a bellows (70). The panel walls may be of integral glass, Fig. 5, not shown, and the jig provided with a local heater (89) over the cap (85) which has integral notched legs (87) which fuse with wall (87) on heating to seal cap (85) over aperture (84). The filler slab 22 may be perlite or silica aerogel.
