Abstract

1,064,136. Percussive tools. A. H. PETER. SON. Jan. 22, 1965 [Feb. 6, 1964], No. 2927/65. Heading B4C. [Also in Divisions F1 and F2] A mechanism for vibrating, shaking, pounding, punching or impacting comprises a hammer reciprocated within a cylinder by pressurized elastic-fluid. In a vibrator 10 a hammer 30 is reciprocated within a cylinder 28 by pressurized air, e.g. at a minimum pressure of 30 p.s.i., received from a compressor 54 through an optional pressure regulator valve (not shown) in line 50, an inlet chamber 48 and a port 56 intermittently opened and closed by a main valve 66. With the main valve and hammer in the position shown, the air flows through passage 42, orifice 46 and passage 47 to raise the hammer and discharge air in chamber 36 through a vent 40 to atmosphere. As the hammer reaches the end of its upward or return stroke a rod 118 opens a check valve 114 to vent to atmosphere, or other low pressure, pressurized air trapped in a chamber 84 and exerting a closing force on the main valve 66. This permits the pressure exerted on the effective area 74 of a flange 72 on the main valve to open the main valve against the closing force exerted by an optional cushioning spring 112 and a number of magnets 78. The effective area 74 may be 0À6 square inch and the force exerted thereon 18 1b.The sudden flow of pressurized air into chamber 36 forces the hammer 30 on its downward stroke. This movement is cushioned by compressing the air trapped below the hammer to a pressure sufficient to enable it to escape through radial passages 15 and an 0-ring seal 17. Moreover, when the main valve opens some pressurized air flows through check valve 114 into the chamber 84 to substantially establish pressure balance across the main valve and permit the magnets 78 to return the main valve to its closed position. The diameter of the passage 88 may be varied to adjust the time taken for pressure balance to be established and thereby the timing of closing of the main valve. The timing of opening of the check valve 114 can be altered by adjusting the length of the rod 118. The speed of the upward stroke of the hammer 30 may be adjusted by varying the size of orifice 46 by needle valve 44, or the size of vent 40 by a needle valve (not shown). The vibrator 10 is shown attached in an upright position to a body 20. However, it may be arranged in other positions, e.g. inverted from that shown in which case the hammer is returned by gravity.
