Abstract
A “high rise” polyurethane foam mixture is prepared by the reaction of a methylene-linked polyphenyl polyisocyanate with a polyol of hydroxyl number 300-800, i.p.o. a catalyst, the overall ratio of isocyanate to hydroxyl groups being 1.2-1.45: 1. Preferably, the polyol has an average functionality of 3.5-6.0 and the polyisocyanate comprises 40-75 wt. per cent of diphenylmethane diisocyanate. Suitable polyol components are polyoxyalkylene adducts of water, glycols, dihydric phenols, aliphatic and cycloaliphatic polyols; dihydric phenols; adducts of ethylene, propylene or butylene oxides and polyamines, particularly aniline/formaldehyde polyamines; and polyester polyols, preferably from dicarboxylic acids and triols (or higher polyols). Preferably, there is also used a cross-linking polyol, e.g. glycerol, hexanetriol, trimethylol propane, pentaerythritol, and oxyalkylated diamines or sugars. Catalysts may be certain metal compounds (listed), phosphines, or tertiary amines, e.g. triethylamine, triethylene diamine, tetraalkyl alkylenediamines, N-alkyl morpholines, tetramethyl guanidine, dialkylethanolamines. Preferably with alkylene oxide/polyamine adducts are used trialkylamines, with alkylene oxide/aliphatic polyol adducts, tetraalkyl guanidines. The blowing agent may be water and/or a hydrocarbon or halogenated hydrocarbon boiling below 110 DEG C. There may also be added conventional dispersing agents, surfactants, cell stabilizers, e.g. polyoxyalkylene polysiloxanes, and flame retardants, e.g. halogenated organic phosphorus compounds, or phosphorus-containing polyols may be incorporated in the polyol mixture for this last purpose. In examples, a propoxylated methyl glucoside or polyamine is mixed with diethyl N,N-bis-(hydroxyethyl)-aminomethane phosphonate and minor amounts of tetra-(2-hydroxypropyl) ethylene diamine or di-(2-hydroxypropyl) aniline, and, optionally, dimethylethanolamine or triethylamine and water, together with trichlorfluormethane and a polymethylene polyphenyl polyisocyanate, which may be in the form of a prepolymer, prepared by reaction with a little 3: 1-propylene oxide/triol adduct, and a silicone surfactant.
