Abstract

1,064,794. Thermionic generators. RADIO CORPORATION OF AMERICA. June 9, 1964 [July 9, 1963], No. 23911/64. Heading H1D. A thermionic generator, operated in the ” ball-of-fire ” mode, contains an alkali metal vapour at a pressure of 10-2 to 10 mm. of Hg, and an electron emitter 51 heated to between 1000‹ and 2500‹ K. and having an emissive surface formed with an array of recesses open towards the electron collector 53, the width and depth of the recesses being large compared to the minimum emitter-collector spacing so that the glow plasma is concentrated within the recesses. The recesses may be parallel grooves of square, semi-circular or triangular cross-section formed by machining, or by brazing strips 81 to a base of W, Mo or Ta. Alternatively, the emissive surface may comprise a multiplicity of cellular recesses in the form of inverted pyramids, cuboid, cylindrical or hemispherical depressions. Specific dimensions are given. As shown, the emitter 57 is brazed to a thin tantalum disc 59, the edge of which acts as a heat dam and is sealed to copper terminal ring 65. The copper anode is provided with cooling fins and a central exhaust tubulation and caesium reservoir 77, the envelope being completed by alumina ring 67 and metal sealing rings 69, 71. A cylindrical electrode structure is also described, the emitter having an external, gas-tight, alumina coating. The arc discharge may be initiated by temporarily applying a high voltage between the emitter and collector. An auxiliary electrode comprising wires or rods insulatingly mounted in the emitter grooves may be used to initiate, improve or control the discharge, and may serve as auxiliary electron emitter, positive ion emitter or control electrode.
