Abstract
A furnace chamber Fig.7 (not shown) for the heat-treatment of coils of metal strip has upper and lower openings, a radiant heat source (14, Fig. 2) in proximity to the upper end of a coil (C), and means for withdrawing the furnace atmosphere from the lower opening and recirculating it, optionally through a cooler, to the upper opening, where it is diffused (25, Fig. 2) over the heat source and the charge. In a modification Fig. 2 (not shown) chambers are arranged in pairs the chambers being capable of independent operation or of operation with interchange of atmospheres whereby heat exchange between hot and cold charges may be effected.
