Abstract

1,067,285. Moulding plastic substances; injection mouldings. BATTELLE DEVELOPMENT CORPORATION. Jan. 19, 1965, No. 2353/65. Heading B5A. [Also in Division B8] The side wall of a nozzle of plastics material, e.g. polyethylene or materials comprising nylon, polypropylene, polycarbonates or elastomeric polymeric materials, is shaped to provide a compressive stress on a slit formed in the nozzle end by subjecting a pre-formed nozzle to internal pressure from a member 408 while immersing the lower end of the nozzle in a hot liquid 494. The member 408 is under pressure from a spring 411. Instead of the hot liquid, sprays or jets of a hot fluid such as water, oil, steam or gas may be used; or dielectric heating may be used on a part of the nozzle. The operation may be carried out as a second stage in injection moulding or blow moulding, using the mould dies with which the nozzle was formed. A further means of shaping the wall of a preformed nozzle, Fig. 14, comprises a mould the upper part (491) of which is insulated by a member (493) while the lower part (492) of the mould is heated, either by hot fluid supplied through an opening (404) or by dielectric, radiant, conduction or induction heating. The lower part (492) of the mould is cooled after shaping the nozzle. Again, a leaf spring may be moulded into the nozzle wall, Fig. 31, pins (422) holding the spring in position while the plastics is injected into the mould.
