Abstract

1,067,407. Multi-stage flash evaporators; desalination of sea water. UNITED STATES ATOMIC ENERGY COMMISSION. July 12, 1965 [July 28, 1964], No. 29415/65. Heading B1B. A multistage-multilevel sea water flash evaporator comprises a concrete shell with a protective liner, of e.g. steel, a series of vertically disposed trays 2 divided by baffles 3, 5 into a plurality of stages which are at gradually decreasing temperature and pressure, condenser tubes 6, 7 extending on either side of the trays through which brine from the final stage is recycled together with fresh sea water so heating the water and condensing the vapours from the evaporation stages on the tubes for collection as product liquid in troughs 8. Raw sea water enters through twin conduits 9 and after passing through tubes 6 and absorbing heat from six stages the warmed sea water from the tubes serving the lower trays is returned to the sea water reservoir 12 while the water from the tubes serving the upper trays passes via header 10 and conduit to a deaerator 14, being treated at 13a with sulphuric acid. After removal of non-condensible gases by pump 15 this makeup feed joins brine from the final stage in chamber 17 and is pumped through twin conduits 24 to condenser tubes 7 extending past the remaining stages. The warmed water leaving tubes 7 is further heated e.g. by steam from a nuclear reactor before being returned through header 18 to the first stage of the evaporator.
