Abstract

Neopentyl glycol diacrylate and dimethacrylate are prepared by heating to boiling 1 mole of neopentyl glycol and 2.5 moles of acrylic or methacrylic acid in benzene in the presence of hydroquinone and concentrated sulphuric acid, the water of reaction being removed azeotropically and continuously. The sulphuric acid and unreacted (meth)acrylic acid are removed by washing with water.ALSO:Anaerobic curing compositions suitable for the bonding of metallic surfaces such as nuts and bolts comprise the neopentyl glycol diester of acrylic or methacrylic acid, a polymerization inhibitor, an organic peroxy compound as a polymerization initiator and, optionally, an accelerator or activator. Suitable inhibitors are hydroquinone, pyrogallol, quinhydrone and monoaryl (e.g. monophenyl) or monoalkyl (e.g. monobutyl) ethers of hydroquinone. Initiators specified are di-t.-butyl peroxide, t.-butyl hydroperoxide, t.-butyl perbenzoate, di-t.-butyl perphthalate (used in dimethyl phthalate), methyl ethyl ketone peroxide, cumene hydroperoxide and di-isopropylbenzene hydroperoxide. As accelerator there may be used benzene sulphinic acid, which may be substituted by a methyl and/or chloro group, cobalt compounds, e.g. cobalt chloride, ascorbic and isoascorbic acids, and amines such as dimethylaniline, triethanolamine and triethylamine.
