Abstract

1,070,236. Rasping tyres. BENTHAM TYRE MACHINERY CO. Ltd. March 12, 1964 [March 13, 1963], No. 9882/63. Heading B4B. A machine for rasping tyres prior to retreading includes power-driven means, comprising flanges 18 and motor-driven rollers 19 engaged with the tyre T by a pneumatic ram and cylinder arrangement 20, for rotating the tyre T, a power-driven rotary rasp or cutter head 9 able to traverse to and fro in engagement with the tyre, and a pair of power-driven rotary rasps or brushes housed in hoods 40 and able to engage simultaneously the two sides or walls of the tyre. As described in Specification 1,047,591, the tyre T is clamped between the flanges 18, inflated by admission of air and rotated by the pulley 19 held in contact with the tyre by a ram 20 and lever mechanism 21. A mounting (28, Fig. 2) for the rasps or brushes (39), on the top bar 4 of the machine frame, includes a motor-driven traverse screw (29) and a nut (30, Fig. 4) arranged to raise or lower a saddle (35) which carries motors (37) for the rasps (39). In operation, when the machine is started, the saddle travels downwardly for a predetermined distance, and the rasps (39) begin to rotate, and are then forced towards each other by operation of a pneumatic ram (41) until they engage the side walls of the tyre. The saddle then reverses and the side walls of the tyre are brushed from the beads outwardly, When the saddle reaches its top position the rasps or brushes are stopped and are moved outwardly by the ram. The positions of the saddle are determined by adjustment of a limit switch mechanism (42, Fig. 3). The rasping and profiling of the tyre treads occurs simultaneously with the treatment of the side walls and is controlled by a detachable template 13, which can be adjusted to move arcuately, by a hand wheel 25, and is accommodated on a laterally-movable carriage adjustable by a hand-lever; the carriage may be locked in any predetermined position by a spring-loaded plunger 26 and coacting depressions. The cutter head (not shown) and output shaft 8 are carried by arms 5, 6, and during operation, urged penumatically towards the template, the follower being made to trace the template by a forked arm 14 which is arranged to be rotated by a motor. A dust extracting duct 27 and fan are coupled to the rasp hood 9, and hoods 40 for the rasps (39) are provided with dust extracting ducts 45. In a modification, the tread rasping means may be duplicated, to permit treatment of a tyre at diametrically opposite points.
