Abstract

1,070,296. Rope railways. SOCIETE DES FORGES ET ATELIERS DU CREUSOT. Sept. 11, 1964 [Oct. 4, 1963], No. 37354/64. Heading B7L. [Also in Division F2] In a safety brake of a cable-hauled rail vehicle system wherein the or each cable runs over a drive winch (not shown) at one end of the path and round a reversing wheel (not shown) at the other end of the path, cable ends 5a, 5b are coupled by fixed and movable spindles 7 and 10 respectively to a bracket 8 mounted on the vehicle 1, the latter spindle being urged to the right-hand end of a slot 11 under normal operating conditions against the bias of spring 13 on a rod 12, which is also pivoted on spindle 10, by tension exerted in the cable by a counterweight connected to the reversing wheel. As illustrated in Fig. 3 (not shown), rod 12 is mechanically linked by pivoted levers 17, longitudinal rods (20) and pivoted levers (23) to a spring-biased catch bolt (25) at each end of the vehicle, each bolt retaining a crossmember 30 bearing brake shoes 31. On failure of a cable, the spring 13 urges the rod 12 to the left and through corresponding movement of the linkage, disengages each catch bolt (29) from the associated cross-member allowing its free fall, the forwardmost member, with respect to the direction of motion, braking the vehicle by engagement of the shoes between wheels and rails. The cable and coupling arrangement is duplicated on either side of the vehicle to form a two-cable system, slots (20a) at the end of each longitudinal rod (20) permitting release of the cross-members regardless of which cable breaks. A simplified form of the brake can be used for a central, single cablehauled rail vehicle. Where vehicle axles are close together, the haulage cables may be connected to a cross-member carrying two double shoes disposed between the axles. If two haulage cables are used, the drive winches are driven through a differential so that, firstly the tension in each cable is the same, and secondly, on breaking of one cable, the other ceases to pull the vehicle.
