Abstract

[Also in Division El] In a railway ballast cleaning apparatus adapted to be disposed alongside a railway track and comprising a screening drum 1 and a belt conveyor 15 for returning the cleaned ballast from the drum on to the railway track, the drum is vertically adjustable at its inlet end and, at its other outlet end, is longitudinally slidably mounted, together with a hinged end of the conveyor, on the frame 5 of the cleaning apparatus. The drum 1 is of the bar type and has a helical screw 8 secured to its inner periphery to convey the ballast which is fed into the drum from a conveyor 2. The drum is secured to a frame 3 and is pivotable about pivots 4 slidable on the frame 5. Vertical adjustment of the drum may be by means of a lever 7 pivotable on the frame 5 by a rack and pinion 11, 13. The drive for the drum comprises a pinion engaging a geared rim on the drum, the latter being rotatably supported on rollers. In a modification, Fig. 3 (not shown) the vertical adjustment of the drum is by means of a screw (22) engaging pivotable nuts (21) carried by arms (20) pivotable to the frame (5) and connected to rollers (19) supporting the drum. The belt conveyor 15 is connected by means of a support 14 to the drum 3, the support having rollers 16 slidable on the frame 5. The conveyor is laterally pivotable at 17 on the support 14 and carries on its underside a roller (18), Fig. 2 (not shown), which rests on one rail of the track. Alternatively, the conveyor 15 may be directly connected to the supporting shaft of the drum or its bearing, in which case the support 14 may be omitted. To prepare for the passage of a train through the working site, the screening drum is pivotably moved by the mechanism 7, 11, 13 to a horizontal position as shown in dotted line in Fig. 1. At the same time, or thereafter, the conveyor 15 is pivotably moved about the pin 17 out of the space to be occupied by the train and placed on the ground beside the track.
