Abstract
Thermosetting, modified epoxy resins are produced by reacting epoxidized polymers or copolymers of dienes, or polymers or copolymers of glycidyl esters having an epoxide oxygen content of 0.1 to 15% by weight with a monomercaptomonocarboxylic acid in an amount of 0.1 to 30 mole per cent per mole of epoxide in the polymer. The reaction may be at 80-140 DEG C. and optionally in the presence of a solvent such as an aromatic hydrocarbon. Mercapto-acids specified are thioglycolic acid and a – or b -mercaptopropionic acid. Polymers specified are copolymers of glycidyl (meth)acrylate with butadiene, styrene, acrylonitrile, vinyl chloride, vinylidene dichloride and (meth)acrylic esters, and epoxidation products of polymers of butadiene and isoprene or their copolymers with styrene or alkenes with or without acrylate termonomers. The products may be cross-linked by heat, unsaturated polyesters, polymers which contain acrylic acid double bonds, or bisacrylamide or bisacrylic acid derivatives with accelerators such as tertiary amines or sodium methylate.
