Abstract

A photographic medium comprising a binder free layer of silver halide microcrystals 0.1-0.5 microns thick supported on a substrate and a photo-sensitizing material disposed on the substrate supporting the silver halide layer and on the open surface of the silver halide layer is formed by the vapour deposition of the silver halide layer. The sensitizer which may be a chemical or optical sensitizer is selected from the group of solid non halogen elements of the Periodic Table in Groups 1 through V1 and V111 and organic compounds such as cyanine dyes, condensation products of alkylene oxides, polyamines, polyvinyl resins, sulfoxide and complexed borane hydrides. Inorganic compounds such as copper halides, ammonium halides and acetate and salts providing hydroxyl ions in solution may also be used. The substrate may be glass, paper, gelatine, resins such as polyethylene terephthalate, polyvinyl chloride, copolymers of vinyl acetatevinyl chlorides, polystyrene, polyamides, cellulose acetate and cellulose propionate. The sensitizer is preferably deposited on the substrate by vapour deposition although it may also be formed from solution. After the formation of the silver halide layer an outer layer of another sensitizer is formed on the halide layer either by vapour deposition or from solution. The following specific examples are described:- 1) substrate of subbed polyethylene terephthalate is coated with gold by vapour deposition then with vapour deposited silver bromide and then with an outer sensitizer layer of vapour deposited gold. 2) As example 1 with an outer sensitizer layer of vapour deposited 1,1′ diethyl 2,2′ – carbocyanine bromide (pinacyanol).
