Abstract

1,073,178. Colour television flying-spot scanners. FERNSEH G.m.b.H. Sept. 30, 1964 [Oct. 2, 1963; July 11, 1964], No. 39726/64. Heading H4F. In a colour television flying-spot scanner in which an objective lens 52 images a raster traced upon the fluorescent screen of a scanning cathode-ray tube 51 in the plane of a colour transparency 54, and in which a plurality of optical paths form images of the stop 53 of the objective lens 52 in the planes of adjustable stops 64, 74, 84, 94 associated with photoelectric converter devices 65, 75, 85, 95, the apertures of the adjustable stops are so chosen as to produce a maximum visual signal-to-noise ratio in the resultant colour television image. The light transmitted by the colour transparency is divided by a partially-transparent neutral grey reflector 61 and dichroic mirrors 71 and 81 and passed by way of mirrors 62, 72 and 82 to photo-cells 65, 75, 85 and 95 which yield the luminance signal and red, blue and green colour signals respectively. Lens 52 is arranged to have as large an aperture as possible and its stop 53 is imaged in planes in front of the photo-cells by condenser lenses 63, 73, 83 and 93. In the optical path which primarily determines the resolution of the television image, i.e. the luminance channel or the green channel when a separate luminance channel is not used, the maximum aperture of its adjustable stop is so chosen that the common objective 52 attains its optimum resolution. The stop apertures in the other optical paths are chosen larger, preferably corresponding in one path at least to the maximum numerical aperture of objective 52. The stops may comprise linear iris diaphragms which are coupled together so that the established ratio of the apertures remains constant when the stops are adjusted. When the scanner is operating in accordance with the N.T.S.C. system, the operating ratios are 4: 3: 2 for green-to-red-to-blue. A common stop may be additionally provided in the optical path for the colour signals which may be adjusted independently and simultaneously with the luminance stop.
