Abstract
An organic liquid is purified by introducing it into the side of a distillation column which contains a boiling solvent, which has a lower boiling point than the organic liquid and forms an minimum boiling azeotrope with the impurities, and maintaining a constant concentration in the range of 40 to 90 mol percent of solvent on the plates below the feed-point of liquid-to-be-purified but above the reboiler section of the column. Vapours of the azeotrope leave the top of the column; and the purified liquid (free from solvent) flows out of the base. In an example, a C2-C4 saturated aliphatic carboxylic acid fraction is fed into a column which has been started up under total reflux with water. When the temperature at the base of the column is about 164 DEG C. (940 mm.), distillate taken overhead, is cooled to 52 DEG C. and passed to a separator. The condensate separates into two layers. The organic layer, which contains the impurities together with some acids and water, is discharged from the system. The aqueous layer is refluxed back to the column. Water is introduced into the column below the acid-feed point at a rate sufficient to compensate for the water removed from the system in the organic layer. A dry stream of purified C2-C4 acids is withdrawn from the base of the column, and may be fractionated to separate n-butyric acid. The process may also be used for the purification of 2-pentanone, butyraldehyde and ethylene glycol, using ethanol, acetone and water as solvents, respectively.
