Abstract
Synthetic polyamide textile materials in the form of filaments, fibres, flocks, woven or knitted fabrics, and non-woven sheets, are protected from discolouration and loss of mechanical strength under the action of heat and/or light by treating them with a borohydride. The borohydride may be lithium, sodium, potassium, calcium or magnesium borohydride or an ammonium borohydride in which the ammonium group is organically substituted by four alkyl radicals, e.g. cetyl trimethyl ammonium borohydride or tricapryl methyl ammonium borohydride. The borohydride may be applied from an aqueous alkaline solution of 0.02-4.1 N caustic alkali or from an organic solvent solution, e.g. in methanol, ether, benzene or hexane, the solution preferably containing 1% by weight or less of the borohydride. The solution may be applied by padding for 5-20 seconds or by conducting the textile material through a bath of the solution for up to 5 minutes, the textile material then being wrung out, optionally stored in the moist state in rolls for up to 48 hours and then dried. The borohydride may be used in combination with other polyamide fibre-protecting agents, e.g. hypophosphites, sulphites or oxalates.
