Abstract

1,081,072. Measuring radio-activity. COMMISSARIAT A L’ENERGIE ATOMIQUE. Sept. 8, 1964 [Sept.17, 1963], No. 36766/64. Heading G1A. Radio-active substances are analysed by subjecting them to electro-phoresis and measuring the radio-activity at points along the electrophoresis medium. The medium comprises a paper or plastics strip 12 which dips into electrolyte 14, 15 and to which a potential may be applied by electrodes 10, 11. The strip is covered by a plate 19 opaque to radiation having holes 22 containing copper discs 20 with slits transverse to the strip 12. Geiger counters 18 measure the radio-activity of the strip beneath the slits. The counters are located as close to one another as their size allows. The sample is introduced under one of the counters and the output of that counter and those nearer the anode is recorded. The level to which the output of the counter at the point of introduction falls indicates the activity of elements present colloidally as these do not migrate, and elements in the ionized state and combined with protiens are indicated by peaks on the records of the other counters.
