Abstract

Metallurgical coke briquettes are made from a particulate free swelling coal in the size range 35 to 325 U.S.A. Standard Mesh by the following method:-the particles are oxidized until the free swelling index is not greater than 3; they are then heat-treated to reduce the volatile content to not more than 25% by weight and the hot coal is briquetted; the briquettes are surface-oxidized to a depth of not more than 0.06 inch, preferably 0.01 inch; and finally they are carbonized and cooled. Preferred operating conditions are as follows:-first oxidation at 437 DEG F. (225 DEG C.) in a fluidized bed using nitrogen with 5 to 9% by volume oxygen, for an average time of 30 minutes; heat-treating at 800 DEG F. (425 DEG C.) in a fluidized bed using nitrogen or flue gas; briquetting generally at 660 DEG to 840 DEG F. (350 DEG to 450 DEG C.); surface-oxidation at the temperature of briquetting in an atmosphere containing 5% oxygen for 5 to 10 minutes, e.g. during conveyance to the carbonizer, which may be a shaft type furnace; carbonizing in a reducing atmosphere at about 2000 DEG F. (1093 DEG C.), e.g. for 2 hours, and cooling in air or by water fog in an air stream.
