Abstract
1,084,773. Photo-electric flow detection and sheet sorting. H. BIEL and A. LEUZE [trading as HANS BIEL]. Nov.13, 1964 (Nov.14, 1963], No.46257/64. Heading G1A. Lengths of paper cut from a continuous web are directed to a reject pile and a fault signal is received from one of a number of optical and mechanical detectors scanning the continuous web: the fault signals being first stored on a magnetic belt running with the paper and subsequently transferred prior to the cutter to a shift register having storage locations corresponding to the number of uncut sheets 18-21 before the separator. The web is scanned optically, both back and front, as the web runs over dark rubber rollers 6 and 10, by means of two rows of detectors 11, 12 and 7, 8 placed either side of a fluorescent tube 9, 13 arranged across the width of the web, and is scanned mechanically by wipers at points 4 and 5. The signals from the scanning points are directed through “OR” gates to separate record heads 31-36. The total fault signal for each potential length is read off from the tape 28 and passed to the first storage location 73 of a shift register which is advanced in synchronism with the cutter by photo-cell 77. The fault signal from the last storage location is allowed to pass through AND gate 82 to a separator memory store 83 upon the arrival of the last sheet 21 at photo-cell 77 which supplies a command pulse to this AND gate. The content of the memory store 83 determines the stack to which the sheet is directed, the store being reset as the directed sheet passes the separator photo-cell 87. To stop unnecessary movement of the separator the penultimate store 75 by means of AND gate 100 can hold the separator memory store in a fault condition if it also stores a fault signal for the next sheet.
