Abstract

1,085,023. Winding machines. W. REINERS. Sept. 16, 1964 [Sept. 21, 1963], No. 37792/64. Heading D1J. A thread winding machine having a knotting device 1, Fig. 1, for tying thread ends together, includes means to eliminate the winding-in of a knot formed with a doubled thread, said means including a sensing member 3, and means 4 controlled by the sensing member 3 to sever the thread upon detection of a doubled thread end, and delay means preventing the severing means 4 from cutting the thread in response to the sensing member 3, sensing a knot k. To exclude the effects of the knot k from the sensing member 3 there may be interposed between the sensing member 3 and the thread-cutting device 4 means by which the speed of response of the thread-cutting device 4 is retarded, i.e. by means of a delaying device installed in the operating current circuit of the cutter which permits the cutter to respond only when the measured value has exceeded the specific value for a specific period, or the cutter itself may be formed as a delaying member, for example in the case of electromagnetic actuation it is provided with a high inductance. If the thread dimension to be ascertained is a volume measurement this is preferably effected capacitatively, or if a thickness measurement, it is preferably effected photo-electrically. In Fig. 2 the device senses the thread thickness. The thread F slides on a glass prism 38. Light rays from a lamp 34 are rendered parallel by a lense 35 and are then split in prisms 36 so as to produce vertical and horizontal beams. These beams produce on each of two photoelectric cells 31a and 31b a shadow of a width corresponding to the thread thickness. If two threads are inserted in the slot, the two threads lie side by side on the glass prism 38, so that two shadows are produced on the photo-electric cell 31a while on the photo-electric cell 31b only one shadow is produced. The voltage then occurring at the points d and c of a bridge circuit is amplified in the amplifier 27 and controls an electro-magnet 20 by which the thread-cutting device 4 is actuated. In Fig. 2 a switch 22 is so coupled with the operating and control means of the winding machine that it interrupts the supply lead to the amplifier 27 during those times that the thread is being inserted into and withdrawn from the slot 11. Thus the switch 22 has the effect that the amplifier 27 can be influenced by the voltage occurring at the bridge points d and c only when a measurement is being effected. In both embodiments the knotted thread is passed through the sensing device for a temporary period only after the knot has been tide, the temporary path being indicated by the full line F and the normal path being indicated by the broken line F1.
