Abstract
A synthetic resin composition comprises an aq. soln. of a furfuryl alcohol modified ureaformaldehyde condensate, an acidic curing catalyst in an amount to produce a pH below 7 and a nitrite in combination with either tetra-hydro – 1 – hydroxy – oxazolo – 3,4 – methylene-oxazole – 7 – a – methanol (oxazole) or hexa-methylenetetramine (hexa). The nitrite is preferably water soluble and may be an alkali metal nitrite in amounts of 0.2 to 4.5 parts per 100 parts of condensate. The ” hexa ” may be used at 0.08 to 1.3 parts per 100 parts of condensate. Additional urea may be incorporated in the solution at between 5 and 15 parts by wt. of condensate. Shaped bodies (e.g. foundry moulds and cores) may be made by mixing the resin composition with sand, shaping the mixture and heating it (e.g. to 350-500 DEG F.) to initiate curing of the condensate. The shaped mixture may be removed from the mould after it has been partially cured and final curing obtained as a result of the exothermic curing reaction. Examples relate to the use of sodium and potassium nitrite, potassium cobaltinitrite and butyl nitrite.
