Abstract
1,085,284. Fluid-pressure brakes. FORD MOTOR CO. Ltd. April 15, 1966, No. 16537/66. Heading F2F. A vacuum servo unit 6 for a master cylinder 3 of an hydraulic brake system is arranged with its axis transverse to that of the master cylinder and has a combined control and output member 8 which is coupled to two links 5, 12, arranged between the master cylinder piston 2 and brake pedal 1, through a bell crank 7 which is pivoted at 9 to a support 10 for the servo unit, and has its arms 7a, 7b connected respectively to the member 8 and a pivot 11 interconnecting the two links 5, 12. When the pedal is depressed, the initial movement of link 12 merely compresses a rubber reaction pad 14, but the resulting movement of the member 8 is sufficient to operate a valve spool (22, Figs. 2- 4, not shown) which slides within the power piston (15) of the servo unit 6, causing the rear chamber (19) to be cut off from the evacuated front chamber (18) through closure of a valve passage (21) by a spring-loaded valve piston (24), and atmospheric air to be admitted to the rear chamber (19) by subsequent separation of the valve spool from the valve piston, whereby a pressure differential is created across the piston (15) and an associated diaphragm (17) to apply a boosting force to the member 8, and thence to the link 12, to supplement the pedal effort and effect movement of master cylinder piston 2. Since the valve spool (22) follows up this movement, equilibrium is reached when the pressure differential across the diaphragm of the servo unit corresponds to the pedal pressure. A spring (20) within the front chamber (18) of the servo unit effects return of the linkage as pressure on the pedal, and hence the pressure differential across the diaphragm, is reduced.
