Abstract

1,087,893. Refrigerating. ARTHUR D. LITTLE Inc. May 18, 1965 [June 17, 1964], No.21048/65. Heading F4H. In a refrigerating machine which includes a piston 11 movable within an enclosure to define a chamber 12 of variable volume, fluid is supplied to and withdrawn from chamber 12 via a regenerator 13 and radial ducts 25 within the piston and an annular gap 20 between the piston and enclosure. In the cycle shown, regenerator 13 is connected via ducts 24 and space 33 to a conduit 34 which may be connected to high or low pressure reservoir 37, 39 by valves 38, 40, a compressor 36 being provided between the reservoirs. Energy absorbing means 41 are connected to the piston. The fluid flow path described above may be incorporated within a machine having a driven, stepped piston which, with its enclosure defines a warm chamber and two cold chambers all of variable volume, a regenerator being provided in each piston section (Figs. 6 and 8, not shown). The piston of such a machine may be driven pneumatically (Fig. 7, not shown) and may be modified in that the upper piston section comprises two regenerators (Fig. 9, not shown). The fluid flows between the two regenerators through an annular gap between the upper piston section and the enclosure wall which is cooled by a liquid nitrogen coil at this location. The refrigerating machine may alternatively operate on a modified Taconis cycle and comprise two separately driven pistons of different diameter (Figs. 10 and 11 not shown) or on a modified Stirling cycle and comprise a lower piston and an upper stepped displacer (Fig. 12, not shown). In both cases intermediate cooling is provided by liquid nitrogen and the Stirling cycle machine is associated with an external Joule-Thomson cycle. Appropriate regenerator fillings for the above machines are specified.
