Abstract

1,091,140. “Up-and-over” door opening device; releasable fastenings. A. T. MENDELLE. Oct. 18, 1966 [Dec. 22, 1965], No. 54476/65. Headings E2A and E2M. A spring-loaded latch 11 of an “up-andover” garage door, preferably capable of opening automatically under the influence of counterbalancing weights and/or springs, is operated by a Bowden cable 3 which is actuated by means of a lockable handle 4 attached to post 2 or by a pressure pad 23 situated at an appropriate distance in front of the door. A spring tensioner may be used to ensure the immediate opening of the door on release of the latch, and braking shoes 20 may be provided to arrest the movement of the door when it reaches the fully open position. The latch means may be at the bottom of the door post, on the door, or on the floor beneath the door. As indicated in Figs. 3 and 4, one end of the inner cable 6 of the Bowden cable is attached to drum 5 on shaft 7 associated with handle 4 and the other end of cable 6 is operatively attached to arm 14 of bell crank lever 12, the other arm 15 being operatively attached to door latch 11. In a modification (Fig. 6, not shown), the inner cable is attached directly to the latch. The outer sheath 8 of the Bowden cable is secured at one end to housing 9 of the lockable handle assembly and at the other end to cover 16 of the latch mechanism. Adjustment means (10) are provided at both ends of the Bowden cable. In a modified latch mechanism, see Figs. 7 and 8, a handle 17 is associated with shaft 19 which has a lever 18 operatively connected to latch 11 for withdrawing the latch for manual opening of the door. Instead of the door latch co-operating with a fixed member of the door, it may co-operate with a handle-operated bolt, (Fig. 14, not shown). The pressure pad actuating means comprises housing 25 containing swivel bracket 26 haying bell crank 27 pivotally mounted thereon, see Fig. 11. One arm of the bell crank is attached to the end of the inner cable and the other arm is operatively connected to pad 28. Compression springs 29 are provided below the pad and a layer 30 of rubber is provided above the pad. The end of the outer sheath of the Bowden cable is secured to the housing. In a modification (Figs. 12 and 13, not shown), the compression springs are replaced by a tension spring and the bell crank is mounted on a pivot instead of on a swivel bracket.
