Abstract
1,094,653. Superheterodyne circuits. PLESSEY-UK Ltd. Sept. 4, 1964 [Sept. 6, 1963], No. 35337/63. Heading H3Q. In a superheterodyne receiver in which the local oscillator 3 comprises a digital frequency synthesizer with facilities for stepping from one channel to an adjacent channel, breakthrough of an unwanted signal can occur due to the intermodulation in the mixer 2 of a harmonic of the unwanted signal with one of the harmonics generated in the local oscillator. To prevent this a switch S3 is provided whereby the local oscillator frequency can be switched to that for an adjacent channel and so change the intermediate frequency generated. Switches S1, S2 ganged with the switch S3 replace the I.F. filter 4 by a filter 5 tuned to the new intermediate frequency. Alternatively a double superheterodyne (Fig. 2, not shown) may be used: in this the first oscillator comprises a digital synthesizer as described above, and the pass band of the first I.F. amplifier is made wide enough to pass either I.F. signal. The bandwidth of the second I.F. amplifier is made narrow, the switch changing the frequency of the first oscillator being ganged with a further switch which causes the frequency of the second oscillator to be shifted to an extent equal to that by which the first oscillator frequency is changed. The second oscillator preferably uses switched crystals.
