Abstract

Homopolymers of itaconic anhydride are claimed per se which may be converted to the acid by treatment with water. The polyitaconic anhydride may be prepared by polymerization in an inert organic solvent from which the polymer separates as a finely divided powder, e.g. benzene, chloroform and/or petroleum ether, and in the presence of a catalyst, e.g. dibenzoyl or dilauryl peroxide, diisopropyl or dicyclohexyl percarbonate, or azoisobutyronitrile, and optionally a co-catalyst, e.g. cobalt oleate, which is soluble in organic solvents. The catalysts may be added continuously during polymerization. The polyitaconic anhydride while being dissolved in water may be heated and evolves carbon dioxide, or the solution may be treated with ferric chloride solution to produce an iron complex. The polyitaconic anhydride may be dissolved in methanol to produce the semi-ester.ALSO:Itaconic anhydride is prepared from itaconic acid by heating the acid with acetyl chloride and then distilling off the excess acetyl chloride under atmospheric pressure and the acetic acid formed under vacuo, the temperature being kept below 90 DEG C. to prevent the itaconic anhydride from being converted to citraconic anhydride.
