Abstract

1,102,351. Treating synthetic fibres. FARBWERKE HOECHST A.G. 8 Feb., 1965 [7 Feb., 1964], No. 5475/65. Heading B5B. [Also in Division D1] The tinctorial and antistatic properties of shaped structures of synthetic linear high molecular weight polymer e.g. filaments, films etc. are improved by treating them with an aqueous solution, dispersion or emulsion of an organic compound (A) which is stable with respect to water at temperatures up to 40‹ C., containing in the molecule at least 40% by weight, preferably 60-95% by weight, of polyalkyleneglycol ether radicals and at least two reactive atoms or radicals selected from the group consisting of active hydrogen atoms linked to oxygen, sulphur or basic nitrogen, radicals capable of reacting with such active hydrogen atoms, and precursors of said active hydrogen atoms or of radicals capable of reacting therewith, stretching the shaped structures if not already stretched drying the structures and then shrinking them at an elevated temperature. The shaped structure may be a single filament or a tow. The material of the filament or film may be a polyester such as polyethylene terephthalate, a polyolefine such as polyethylene or polypropylene, or a polyamine. The precursors of the reactive functions in the compounds (A) may be amine salts, chlorohydrin radicals or masked isocyanate or vinyl sulphonic groups. The compound (A). may be crosslinked during or after the said shrinking at elevated temperature. The crosslinking may be carried out by intramolecular reaction of the compound (A) or by reaction with a compound (B) which contains, per molecule, at least two groups which will react with the reactive atoms or radicals or the precursors thereof of compound (A). The compound (B) may be applied to the filaments etc. at the same time as compound (A) or after the application of compound (A). The crosslinking reaction may be carried out in the presence of a catalyst. It may be carried out after the shrinking step. Compounds containing active hydrogen atoms or their precursors may be primary or secondary amino groups or their salts with inorganic or organic acids, compounds containing alcoholic or phenolic hydroxyl groups, mercapto groups or carboxyl groups. Compounds capable of reacting with active hydrogen atoms may contain epoxy groups, vinyl-sulphone groups, acroyl groups, ethylene-imide groups, and N-methylol groups. The compounds may be alkylating agents containing at least two reactive halogen atoms or sulphuric or sulphonic acid ester groups.
