Abstract
1,102,462. Ion sources. ASSOCIATED ELECTRICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. 27 Oct., 1964 [31 Oct., 1963], No. 43063/63. Heading HID. In a mass spectrometer ion source arrangements for controllably cooling the metal walls of the ionization chamber in which sample material is present in vapour form include supporting the chamber 1, Fig. 1, by means of heat conducting plates 3, 4 on a cooling block or heat sink 5 into which cooling ducts 11,12 extend, or the ducts 11, 12 may extend through the block 5 into the ionization chamber. The cooling ducts may be in thermal contact with the chamber walls. In an alternative embodiment a thermo-electric cooling device is mounted in thermal contact with a heat sink supporting the ionization chamber or against a wall of the ionization chamber. In a further embodiment, Fig. 4, the ionization chamber 20 is mounted for ready removal on a sliding bar 21 and a heat sink in the form of a block 23 with an arcuate surface may be moved by means of a lever and cam mechanism 28, 29 into or out of contact with the bar 21. The housing including the flexible bellows 26 contains cooling fluid. In Fig. 1 the ion source is of the electron bombardment type and radiation shields may be inserted between the electron emitting filament 31 and the accelerating electrode 32, these shields being in good thermal contact with the heat sink 5. In Fig. 4 the ion source is of the type in which the ionization is produced thermally, the ionization chamber 20 supporting a filament assembly.
