Abstract
Growing plants are exposed to light which has been contacted by an organic fluorescent colorant to obtain light of predominantly red wavelengths (i.e. 5500 <\>rA to 7000 <\>rA, preferably 6000 <\>rA to 7000 <\>rA). The contacted light may include a substantial portion of blue wavelengths and an ultra-violet inhibitor may be used to preserve the stability of the fluorescent colorant. The colorant may comprise a fluorescent pigment or dye and may be incorporated in a resinous carrier which is transparent or translucent, for example 1% BXP rhodamine-acid red fluorescent dye dispersed in vinyl plastisol. The colorant may be held by a support forming an enclosure for the plant. For example, an adhesive in combination with the colorant may be applied to transparent or translucent paper, resinous or plastic film which is secured to at least some of the lights of a greenhouse containing the plants. The plants may be surrounded by cylinders coated on their inner surface with the colorant.ALSO:Growing plants are exposed to light which has been contacted by an organic fluorescent colorant to obtain light which is fluorescent in character and formed of predominantly red wavelengths. The colorant may comprise a fluorescent pigment or a dye which may be incorporated in a resinous carrier which is transparent or translucent. For example an adhesive in combination with the colorant may be applied to transparent or translucent paper, resinous or plastic film which is secured to at least some of the lights of a greenhouse containing the plants. The plants may also be surrounded by cylinders coated on their inner surface with the colorant.
