Abstract
An aryl silicate composition is made by heating a tetraphenyl silicate and/or tetracresyl silicate with another phenol, appropriate to the production of a mixed aryl silicate, in the presence of water in an amount sufficient to cause partial hydrolysis and condensation of the silicate. The water is best provided by using wet phenol or a hydrated salt and effecting the reaction at 100 DEG to 250 DEG C. The purification of aryl silicates described in Specification 37025/64. may be combined with the above process by incorporating a zeolite in the reaction mixture. In examples, mixed aryl silicates are made by the above process from tetraphenylsilicate and (1) o-phenylphenol and (2,3,4) resorcinol. Aroxysilanes, e.g. phenyl- and biphenyl-triphenoxy silanes, may also be used as the starting material. Uses: as heat transfer media.ALSO:An aryl silicate composition, obtained by heating a tetraphenyl silicate and/or tetracresyl silicate with another phenol in the presence of water (see Division C3), is used as a heat transfer medium.
