Abstract

1,107,624. Ventilating crank-chambers; treating charge. GENERAL MOTORS CORPORATION. June 10, 1965 [June 17, 1964], No. 24542/65. Heading F1B. [Also in Division F2] Crank-case vapours are drawn through a tube 64, through an annular gap between an inturned flange 56 of a valve member 46 and a valve seat 72 formed at the end of a tube 70, and finally through an outlet 66 to the engine inlet manifold. The valve member 46 is carried by a diaphragm 34 which is secured to a cover 32 at its periphery and centre. Inner and outer folds 44, 42 in the diaphragm permit movement of the valve which is biased open by a spring 74. The inner fold 44 and the cylindrical extension 54 of the valve are so dimensioned relative to the valve seat that forces acting on them, as a result of manifold suction, are balanced so that the valve moves in response to pressure variations in only the crankcase breather pipe 64 and a connected annular space 62. The valve is closed by a bi-metallic spring 90 under cold starting conditions. A ball check valve 88 closes the outlet 66 in the event of an engine backfire. In a modification, Fig. 4 (not shown), the bi-metallic spring closes the check valve under cold conditions.
