Abstract
A composition for coating or surfacing paper comprises a synthetic latex of a copolymer of a vinyl ester and an acrylic ester, an acrylic copolymer or homopolymer or a styrenebutadiene copolymer and glyoxal. It may also contain a starch or casein adhesive and a filler. In the Examples: (1) potato starch is degraded by an enzymatic process, kaolin is mixed with hexametaphosphate and water and then with the degraded starch and the dispersion divided into portions, to some portions is added a latex of a copolymer of vinyl acetate, 2-ethylhexyl acrylate and acrylic acid plasticized by dibutyl phthalate, to others glyoxal and to others both latex and glyoxal in various proportions; (2) kaolin, sodium hexametaphosphate, oxidized starch and water are mixed, various quantities of glyoxal, the latex of Example 1 or a similar atex containing no acrylic acid, and a protective colloid, are added; (3) clay, sodium hexametaphosphate, oxidized starch, polyvinyl alcohol and water are mixed and divided into portions, to these are added various amounts of glyoxal and a styrene-butadiene latex; (4) chalk, enzyme-converted starch, water-dispersible pigment and water are mixed, to the mixture are added various proportions of glyoxal and a copolymer of vinyl acetate and ethyl acrylate plasticized by hexylene glycols; (5) talc, kaolin, carboxymethylcellulose, sodium hexametaphosphate, water-dispersible pigment and water are mixed and to the mixture are added various quantities of glyoxal, and the copolymer of Example 4 or a copolymer of ethyl acrylate, methyl methacrylate and acrylic acid; (6) water, starch, oxalic acid and glyoxal are mixed and heated at 90 DEG C. to gel it, when it is neutralized with calcium carbonate, this material is mixed with fine chalk and water and then with the copolymer of Example 4 and glyoxal; (7) a composition comprises the copolymer of Example 2, a latex of a copolymer of ethyl acrylate, butyl acrylate and methyl methacrylate, glyoxal and water.ALSO:Paper is coated with a composition comprising a synthetic latex, glyoxal and optionally a starch or casein adhesive and a filler. The synthetic latex is of a copolymer of a vinyl ester and an acrylic ester, an acrylic copolymer or homopolymer or a styrene-butadiene copolymer. In the Examples: (1) potato starch is degraded by an enzymatic process, kaolin is mixed with hexametaphosphate and coated and then with the degraded starch and the dispersion divided into portions, to some parts is added a latex of a copolymer of vinyl acetate, 2-ethylhexyl acrylate and acrylic acid plasticized by dibutyl phthalate, to others glyoxal and to others both latex and glyoxal in various proportions, the resulting compositions are coated on to paper (2) kaolin, sodium hexametaphosphate oxidized starch and water are mixed, various quantities of glyoxal, the latex of example 1 and a similar latex containing no acrylic acid, but a protective colloid, are added and the compositions coated on to paper; (3) clay, sodium hexametaphosphate, oxidized starch, polyvinyl alcohol and water are mixed and divided into portions, to these are added various amounts of glyoxal and a styrene-butadiene latex, the compositions are coated on to paper; (4) chalk, enzyme-converted starch, water-dispersible pigments and water are mixed to the mixture are added various proportions of glyoxal and a copolymer of vinyl acetate and ethyl acrylate plasticized by hexylene glycol; these compositions are coated on to paper; (5) talc, kaolin, carboxymethylcellulose, sodium hexametaphosphate, water-dispersible pigment and water are mixed and to the mixture are added various quantities of glyoxal, the copolymer of Example 4 and a copolymer of ethyl acrylate, methyl methacrylate and acrylic acid; (7) wall-paper is coated with a composition comprising the copolymer of Example 2, a latex of a copolymer of ethyl acrylate, butyl acrylate and methyl methacrylate, glyoxal and water.ALSO:Paper is surface-sized with a composition comprising a synthetic latex, glyoxal and optionally a starch or casein adhesive and a filler. The synthetic latex is of a copolymer of a vinyl ester and an acrylic ester, an acrylic copolymer or homopolymer or a styrenebutadiene copolymer. In the Examples: (5) talc, kaolin, carboxymethylcellulose, sodium hexametaphosphate, water-dispersible pigment and water are mixed and to the mixture are added various quantities of glyoxal, a copolymer of vinyl acetate and ethyl acrylate and a copolymer of ethyl acrylate, methyl metacrylate and acrylic acid; (6) water, starch, oxalic acid and glyoxal are mixed and heated at 90 DEG C to gel it, when it is neutralised with calcium carbonate, this material is mixed with fine chalk and water and then with a copolymer of vinyl acetate and ethyl acrylate, and with glyoxal, this composition is used in the manufacture of wallpaper; (8) and (9) thin unsized papers and commercial grades of paper are treated with glyoxal alone, the latex of a copolymer of ethyl acrylate, methyl methyacrylate and acrylic acid alone or various mixtures of the two, in a size press. The product may be used for offset printing, decorative wallpaper, serviettes or handkerchiefs.
