Abstract

1,112,161. Forging; shearing; making balls. ROTA FORG CORPORATION. 9 July, 1965 [24 March, 1965], No. 29155/65. Headings B3A, B3H and B3W. Workpieces are pressed to shape between dies 120, 121, Fig. 14, mounted on contra-rotating rotors 40, 42. The pressing may be performed hot or preferably cold. Bar stock 72 is fed by continuously acting rollers 68, 70 through a fixed apertured die 74 where it is sheared by one of four shear dies 78 mounted on a continuously rotating rotor 38. During shearing the feed rollers may slip on the rod 72. The sheared blank 86 is gripped between spring fingers 88, Fig. 10 (not shown), and conveyed to a point opposite the rotor 40 where it is ejected by a rod 90 actuated through rack-and-pinion gearing (19), (100), (102), Fig. 8 (not shown), by a follower 97 running in a stationary cam-track 96. The ejected blank 86 is pushed between one of four sets of spring-biased fingers 126 mounted on the rotor 40 and is carried thereby to a point adjacent the rotor 42 where it is forged into a ball between the dies 120, 121. These dies are each mounted on a carrier 140, 141 pivoted on a shaft such as 142 and having follower rollers 144, 146 co-operating with fixed cams such as 148, 150 to maintain the axes of the dies in alignment during forging, Fig. 23, 24 (not shown). The fingers 126 are also forced open during forging by cams 164. Finally the balls are ejected from the dies 120, 121 by ejector rods (166), (167), Fig. 17 (not shown). The three rotors 38, 40, 42 are driven by gearing (44), (46), (48), by a single motor (56), Fig. 1 (not shown).
