Abstract
1,112,380. Bearings, lubricating; screw and nut mechanism. WILLIAM ASQUITH Ltd. 16 Aug., 1965 [22 Aug., 1964], No. 34452/64. Headings F2A and F2Q. A mechanism comprises a parallel worm and rack, the rack being longer than the worm and having recesses in the flanks of its teeth, and means supplying lubricant under high pressure, i.e. to form a fluid film, to the recesses in only those rack teeth which are engaged by the worm. Lower pressure oil is supplied to outlets in the teeth adjacent those engaged. A distributer block 30 carrying a slide 22, e.g. of a machine tool, slides in a channel between the rack 16 and bed 18 and moves along beside the worm 10. The block 30 has high pressure lubricant supply passages (40, 42, 44, 48, 50, 52, Fig. 2, not shown) leading to recesses 32, 34 in the face adjacent the rack and recesses 36, 38 in the opposite face 26, thus hydrostatically balancing the block. Recesses 32, 34 communicate with the ends of passages 64, 66, 68, 70 which are provided for each tooth in the rack and which lead to outlet recesses 72 in the flanks of the respective tooth. As the recesses 32, 34 extend only for the length of the worm, only those rack teeth engaging the worm are supplied. Recesses (74, 76, Fig. 2, not shown) in the block on either side of recesses 32, 34 are supplied with low-pressure lubricant and communicate via passages with the rack teeth on either side of the worm.
