Abstract

An electrical bushing (see Division H2) is moulded (see Divisions B4-B5) by adding filled epoxy or polyester resins to the bushing assembly in a mould which is filled with quartz or calcite filler of maximum grain size between 1.2 and 1.5 mm., the resin containing additional filler of average grain size between 1/100 th and 1/5 th of the average grain size of the filler in the mould whereby the total filler comprises 70-80% to produce a similar thermal expansion in the resin and metal parts of the bushing. A suitable epoxy resin is prepared by reacting 100 parts by weight of polyglycidal ether resin (having an epoxy content of 5.3 per kg. and prepared by alkaline reaction of epichlorohydrin with bis-(4-hydroxyphenyl)-dimethylmethane) with 100 parts of hardening agent comprising a mixture polycarboxylic acid anhydrides and 300 parts of calcite (average particle diameter 5 microns) to which is added 1.7 parts of tris-(-dimethylamino-methyl-)-phenol accelerator and 10 parts of polypropylene glycol of average molecular weight 425. In a further example, 80 parts of hexahydrophthalic acid anhydride hardening agent and 250 parts of 5 micron calcite are employed with 1 part of the same accelerator and the polypropylene glycol is omitted or, alternatively, 100 parts of 9-(3,4-epoxycyclohexyl) – 2,3 – epoxy – 8,10 – dioxaspiroundecane are employed with 95 parts of hexahydrophthalic acid anhydride and 290 parts of the calcite to which are added 12 parts of an alcoholate prepared by reacting 0.82 g. of sodium with 100 g. of 3-hydroxymethyl 2,4-dihydroxypentane.
