Abstract
1,114,014. Ratchet clutches. NATIONALSTANDARD CO. 3 Feb., 1967 [11 March, 1966], No. 5392/67. Heading F2C. [Also in Division B3] The band 9 of a coil-type freewheel clutch has the end anchor portion 12 formed by bending over the outer end portion 14, provided with a transverse rib portion 20, to form a tubular end fold 16, inserting a strip 25 of brazing metal between the adjacent band portions 14, 15, the strip having holes 26, 27 enabling opposed areas 28, 29 of the outer and inner portions 14, 15 to be spot welded to hold the strip 25 in position during the subsequent brazing. Strip 25 may be of silver solder or of brazing paste, brazing being effected by heating the band and joint to a temperature of 1400-1550 F. The band is then quenched in oil at room temperature and stress relieved at 400-500 F., after which the band is accurately shaped to the desired spiral form and heat set at 650-750 F. according to the hardness desired. In a modification, Figs. 5-8 (not shown), a central longitudinal rib is formed in the bent-over portion 14, the spot welding areas being provided on opposite sides of the rib.
