Abstract
1,114,051. Electricselective signalling. WESTERN ELECTRIC CO. Inc. 11 May, 1965 [11 May, 1964], No. 19770/65. Heading G4H. [Also in Division B8] An apparatus for detecting the absence of a strand to be wound on a cable comprises gated photo-electric detectors. Each binder head, which rotates about the cable axis and carries the strand spools, has on it a reflecting strip which is detected by a photo-detector, thereby providing gating pulses whose frequency and duration varies.with the speed of rotation of the head. Photo-detectors, one for each strand, are mounted on a fixed support and generate a pulse each time a strand is detected. For a pair of strands, two photo-detectors are so arranged that their respective outputs, when gated, contain only pulses relating to one and to the other strand. These gated outputs set and reset a toggle which feeds a flip-flop whose unstable state is sufficiently long to maintain a relay operated even at low binding speeds. If a strand breaks, the flip-flop, and hence the relays, are no longer operated, this stopping the binding and initiating an alarm. Single strands are detected by turning the gate on permanently.
