Abstract

1,114,449. Direct lift aircraft. ROLLS-ROYCE Ltd. 15 July, 1966 [23 July, 1965], No. 31602/65. Addition to 890,755. Heading B7G. An aircraft is provided with a gas-turbine vertical lift engine having an exhaust nozzle comprising an annular portion arranged to receive the turbine exhaust gases and a plurality of separate nozzle members which communicate with the annular portion and through which the exhaust gases are discharged as in the parent Specification 890,755, except that in addition either (a) the nozzle members 36 discharge the exhaust gases in a direction at an angle (e.g. 90 degrees) to the inlet axis, the nozzle being rotatable to deflect the thrust, or (b) the nozzle member cross-section is no longer circular but either elliptical, Fig. 4, or ” multi-bubble,” Fig. 5 (not shown). This gives a greater distance a between the nozzle members than that b between equivalent nozzle members 201 of circular cross-section with the same outlet area, thereby facilitating the flow therebetween of ambient air. The ” multi-bubble ” shape is said to assist silencing. There may be radial passages (46), Fig. 7 (not shown), through the annular portion of the exhaust nozzle to allow ambient air to be drawn into the core of the jet efflux.
