Abstract

1,114,454. Separating particles from gases; centrifugal separators. ST. REGIS PAPER CO. 31 May, 1965 [1 June, 1964], No. 23108/65. Headings BIT and B2P. [Also in Division B8] In a process for filling a container with a particular substance, a mixture of the substance and a gas, inert to the substance, is passed through a filling spout which comprises, inlet and outlet ports, a curvilinear channel between the ports and a gas venting channel connecting with the inner periphery of the curvilinear channel, the mixture being re-distributed, under the action of centrifugal forces produced by the changes of direction to produce a gas stream substantially free from solid particles, which is withdrawn through the gas venting channel, the remaining gas and substance being delivered via the outlet port to the container. The substance e.g. cement is delivered to the inlet port 12 from a fluidising chamber (15), Fig. 1 (not shown) of the closed type having compressed air blown through a perforate false sloping bottom (25) and through a central perforate distributor (33). In one filling spout arrangement the curvilinear channel 14 is in the form of a helical spiral, defined by a strip 38, 39 within a shell 11, and a cylindrical hub 42. A gas venting channel 44 communicates between the channel 14 and a gas discharge pipe 35, which pipe is connected via a ball valve (46), Fig. 9 (not shown) to a vacuum pump. The hub 42 and strip 38, 39 may be formed integrally. In another embodiment, several turns of the spiral channel may be formed separately, Fig. 7 (not shown) with peripheral flanges, and then bolted together. An alternative spout, Fig 12 (not shown), replaces the hub 42 with a rotatable vane. In a further embodiment, Fig. 13 (not shown), the entering fluid stream is separated into a number of parallel streams, by curved concentric vanes in a right angled pipe bend, each stream being thus subjected to centrifugal action. The vanes are hollow and connected to gas draw-off means, operated in their outer peripheries communicating with the gas streams. A gas draw-off channel is also arranged on the inner wall of the bend. On leaving the outlet port the stream is delivered horizontally from a nozzle into the container which is supported by conventional pneumatic clamp means, the gap between the nozzle and the opening or valve of the container being filled by a collar as described in U.S.A. Specification 2,955,796, Fig. I (not shown).
