Abstract

1,114,876. Reciprocating conveyers. AMERICAN MACHINE & IRONFOUNDRY CO. 19 April,. 1966 [22 April, 1965], No. 17060/66. Heading B8A. Cigars which have been wrapped in cellophane are directed to a packaging machine by infeed conveyers 50, 52, intermediate conveyers 54, 56 and a discharge conveyer 58. All the conveyers are of the reciprocating rake type and are driven by a single motor. The conveyers 50, 52 are identical, as are the conveyers 54, 56. The rake conveyer 50 comprises a driven rockable arm 80 connected to a main block 98 which slides on rods 102, 104 and which carries a pivot block 99. This block supports a rake 110. As the arm 80 moves towards the right as seen in Fig. 5, the initial movement rotates pivot block 99 and raises the rake 110 which passes above the cigars as it moves to the right. As the arm starts its movement to the left, pivot block 99 rotates clockwise and, having passed the rake over a selected number of cigars, moves downwardly and draws the group into registry with conveyer 54. To facilitate maintenance &c. the rake assembly may be lifted about a shaft 218 by a knob 120. Chains 128 are fixed to engage and align the cigars. A channel for the cigars is formed by guides 130, 132 of which 132 is adjustable for cigars of different lengths. A hold-down plate 160 bears on the cigars after they pass from beneath the chains 128. The rake conveyer 54 comprises a driven rockable arm 184 which by a rod 190 and a carriage actuating element 192 is connected to a carriage 204. Rakes 248, 251, 252, 253 are secured to the carriages and are operated in unison, between raking and non-raking positions, by a cam mechanism which actuates rake 252 only. This rake is supported on a rod 264 rotatable by the action of a cam 280 which engages a roller plate 272 secured to the rod 264. With the carriage 204 moved to its righthand position in Fig 9, rake 252 is raised by clockwise rotation of the rod 264 so that the rake clears the cigars as it is moved towards the left. In the extreme left-hand position a cam 282 actuates plate 272 and the rake 252 is lowered in position to engage a group of cigars. A leaf spring 270 maintains the plate 272 and the rake in whatever position it may be actuated by the cams. The channel of the conveyer is adjustable for cigars of differing diameters. The discharge conveyer 58 has a rake 376 and a hold-down plate 378 which are raised, lowered and reciprocated by action of a cam 320, linkage 326, 336 and a block 338 which supports the rake. The block 338 is pivoted on a block 342 slidable on bars 350, 352. Means are provided to disable one rake of the multi-rake conveyer 54 or 56 if there are less than the required number of cigars. The conveyers 50, 52 are operated 180 degrees out of phase and the conveyers 54, 56 operate 180 degrees out of phase but in unison.
