Abstract
1,114,988. Positive clutches. BENDIX CORPORATION. 31 Aug., 1966 [22 Oct., 1965], No. 38794/66. Heading F2C. To increase the maximum capacity of an electromagnetically-operated positive clutch having a driving body 12 and a driven armature 28, fast with input and output shafts respectively, formed with peripheral facial teeth 22, 30 which are interengaged by axial movement of the armature 28, splined on a driven hub 46, effected by energizing a coil 16 carried by member 12 and supplied with current through a slip ring 20, the interengaged teeth are positively looked during clutch engagement by the action of a secondary armature 38 formed with a cam surface 42, which during coil energization is additionally attracted axially towards the coil to seat against the primary armature 28 (Fig. 2, not shown), the cam surface 42 radially expanding a garter spring 44 into a chamfered recess 54 on the hub 46 axially locking the primary armature 28 against disengaging thrust loads generated at the engaged teeth 22, 30. As shown, the primary armature 28 is formed with a series of nonconducting segmented air gaps 32 spaced by spokes (35) (Fig. 3, not shown), or a discontinuous or continuous ring of non-conducting material, whereby initially on coil energization, the flux path from coil 16 passes through the spokes (35) to axially move and engage the primary armature 28, after which the flux intensity through the spokes (35) increases to saturation point forcing the flux path to cross an air gap (B) (Fig. 6, not shown) to axially attract the secondary armature to seat against the primary armature (Fig. 2, not shown). On coil de-energization, the primary armature is disengaged by spring-loaded plungers 24, 26, and the secondary armature moved back to the driven hub 46 by a ring of permanent magnets 50, which ring of magnets are omitted from the simplified embodiment of Figs. 5 and 6 (not shown) in which the secondary armature is journalled in an inner non-conducting ring (160) of the primary armature.
