Abstract
Polymer-inorganic support composites having semi-conducting and catalytic properties are prepared by contacting a polymerizable, unsaturated monomer, under radioactive radiation and in the vapour phase, with a solid porous inert inorganic support having a specific surface area of from 100-500 sq.m/g. (The polymer formed is stated to be “grafted” on to the support.) Monomers specified are vinyl chloride, vinyl acetate, divinyl benzene, vinylidene chloride, acrylonitrile, methacrylonitrile, hexyne-1, octyne-1, cyclohexyl-acetylene and phenyl-acetylene. The support may be a silica, alumina or silico-aluminate. The radiation may be alpha rays, beta rays, neutron fluxes, X-rays or gamma radiation, e.g. from an isotope such as cobalt 60. Polymerization may be effected at ambient or elevated temperature. In some cases, it is necessary to submit the product to a thermal and/or chemical after treatment, e.g. pyrolysis, oxidation or dehydrochlorination. In examples, acrylonitrile is polymerized on to alumina or a silico-aluminate, the composite being subsequently heated at 500 DEG C in a current of helium; the product can be used as a dehydrogenation catalyst (see Division C5).ALSO:A composite material prepared by polymerizing acrylonitrile vapour on a porous support of alumina or a silico-aluminate (see Division C3) is used as a dehydrogenation catalyst for converting cyclohexane to benzene, and butene-2 to butadiene (together with some butene-1 formed by isomerization). The reaction is conducted at 500 DEG C.
