Abstract

1,128,261. Welding by pressure. AMERICAN MACHINE & FOUNDRY CO. 22 Feb., 1966 [2 March, 1965], No. 7754/66. Heading B3R. In welding an edge of a metal strip to another member, the members are advanced along opposite sides of a V-shaped gap tapering towards the weld point at which point the members are forced together, a high frequency electric current is caused to flow on the surfaces of the V-shaped gap between the members and prior to the weld point the edge of the strip is formed with portions protruding from the corner regions thereof. A strip 11, Fig. 1, to form the web of a structural. T member and a strip 10 to form the flange are advanced by rollers with a V-shaped gap 18 therebetween to meet at a weld point w where an upper grooved roller 17 presses on the upper edge of the strip 11, a roller 121 supporting the strip 10. Either or both strips may advance along a curved path. Current of 50,000-400,000 cycles per second or higher is applied by contacts 20, 21 on opposite sides of the gap 18 to flow to and from the weld point. Pairs of grooved rollers 27, 28, 29, 30 engage the edges of the strip 11 in advance of the contacts 20, 21 and shape the lower edge to be welded into a bulged configuration, the sides of the strip being extended outwardly. The higher frequency current which then flows on the edge penetrates deeply into the corners of the bulged portions and the weld between the edge and the strip 11 and the face of the strip 10 shows extruded overheated metal at these portions and a forged weld having a width equal to or greater than the strip width, without protrusions, is formed. Beyond the weld point scarfing tools 37 are provided to remove the extruded metal. An additional flange strip may be similarly welded to the top of the web strip. In modifications, the protruding metal may extend downwardly by forming a shallow channel 42, Fig. 6, or may extend both outwardly and downwardly, Fig. 7 (not shown).
