Abstract

1,128,450. Coating compositions containing carboxy-copolymers. CELANESE COATINGS CO. 22 Dec., 1965 [29 Dec., 1964], No. 54312/65. Headings C3P and C3R. Film-forming or coating compositions comprise an aqueous solution containing ammonia or an amine, a copolymer of a monoethylenically unsaturated carboxylie acid with one or more other mono-ethylenically unsaturated monomers, a substantially non-volatile polyol which is a solvent for the copolymer, and an aminoplast resin curing agent. Suitable polyols are polyalkylene glycols and alkylene oxide condensation products with polyhydric alcohols, preferably with a molecular weight of 200- 2000. The acid component of the copolymer may be acrylic, methacrylic, crotonic or itaconic acid, or a half ester of maleic or fumaric acid; suitable comonomer components include alkyl and hydroxyl alkyl acrylates, methacrylates, α-(hydroxymethyl)-acrylates, crotonates, fumarates or maleates, vinyl acetate, vinyl propionate, acrylonitrile, acrylamide, methacrylamide, N-methylol-acrylamide and its alkyl derivatives, styrene, vinyl toluene and α-methyl styrene. Some of the carboxy groups of the copolymer may be esterified by reacting with an epoxy compound, thereby introducing hydroxy groups into the copolymer. The resin curing agent may be the reaction product of an aldehyde, e.g. formaldehyde, acetaldehyde, paraformaldehyde or trioxane, with urea, thiourea, melamine, benzoguanamine, acetoguanamine or dicyandiamide, preferably etherified with a lower alcohol. The compositions are prepared by polymerizing the monomer components of the copolymer in solution in the polyol in the presence of a catalyst, such as hydrogen peroxide, benzoyl peroxide, dilauryl peroxide, di-t-butyl peroxide, cumene hydroperoxide or azobisisobutyronitrile, dissolving the product in aqueous ammonia or an aqueous amine solution, and adding the aminoplast resin. An acid catalyst may also be included, e.g. p-toluenesulphonic acid, butyl acid phosphate or phosphoric acid. Films or coatings obtained with the compositions can be cured by heating at 100-250 C. In the examples, the copolymers are derived from acrylic acid and alkyl and hydroxyalkyl acrylates, methacrylates and crotonates.
