Abstract

1,132,472. Controlling reactors. ENGLISH ELECTRIC CO. Ltd. 12 Aug., 1966 [13 Aug., 1965], No. 34715/65. Heading G6C. A method of controlling a fast liquid-metal cooled reactor including a core 13 surrounded by a reflector 14 consists in providing one or more U-tubes 19 having their closed vertical limbs 16A extending through the core, the other limbs 16B being connected through a pump 23 to a fluid-containing reservoir 24. The fluid 19 may be a neutron-absorbing fluid, e.g. liquid lithium or gaseous boron trifluoride or helium. The level of the neutron-absorbing fluid 19 in the limbs 16A, or its pressure if the fluid is gaseous, is variable by the pump 23. If the fluid is a liquid, an inert gas 18 such as argon may be trapped in the limbs 16A above the liquid level. In a modification (Fig. 2, not shown) the fluid 19 may be a liquid metal, e.g. sodium, and act as a driving fluid for moving a solid control rod piston-like in the limbs 16A.
